September Focus: Attendance, Preparedness and Student Well-Being

September months gif for recognition

September gives us an opportunity to focus on three things that matter across Monroe Township Public Schools: helping students remain present, prepared and supported.

Attendance Awareness Month

Being in school consistently helps students build routines, stay connected and benefit from instruction and support that cannot be fully replaced by make-up work. Chronic absenteeism means missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason, which is approximately 18 days.

Families can help by monitoring attendance through Genesis, communicating with the school when an absence occurs, scheduling appointments outside the school day whenever possible and avoiding nonessential absences. Student health and safety remain a priority, and students should remain home when illness makes attendance unsafe or inappropriate.

National Preparedness Month

Emergencies are easier to navigate when families have talked and planned ahead. Take time this month to review how your family will communicate, where your child should go if school dismisses early and what everyone should do if you become separated.

Families should also confirm that emergency contact information is current, prepare or update a household supply kit and keep ParentSquare notifications enabled for district closures, delays and safety information.

National Suicide Prevention Month

Student well-being begins with knowing that it is safe to ask for help. Checking in regularly, listening without judgment and taking concerns seriously can help students feel seen, heard and supported.

Students who are struggling, or who are concerned about a friend, should speak with a parent, guardian, school counselor, mental health professional or another trusted adult. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free and confidential support 24 hours a day. Call or text 988 for crisis support at any time. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

By working together, we can help ensure that every MTPS student feels connected, prepared and supported throughout the school year.
